Reading Notes: Myths of the Hindus and Buddhists Part A (Kaikeyi)

The Scheming of Kaikeyi

This story is very similar to the PDE Ramayana story, however Kaikeyi goes to a room called the "Anger-chamber" where she throws off her jewels and garments to pray to the Gods, and basically throws a fit. Adding this really emphasizes how young Kaikeyi is, as she is the youngest wife of Dasharatha. An older wife more than likely wouldn't have gone to a chamber to be angry, and would probably go directly to her husband to tell him what is troubling her. Younger wives can tend to be more jealous and naive, so it makes sense that she would be the one to be persuaded to easily by her servant Manthara to demand Rama be casted out and have her own son be put on the throne. This story also goes more in depth and tells how at first Kaikeyi wasn't convinced by Manthara. If I recreate this story I would have it set in today's time where Kaikeyi is upset that her husband chose to hang out with his friends rather than stay at home with her and their son. I want to write it in a way that the readers can understand that jealousy can ruin or strain relationships, and that it is better to try and compromise with significant others rather than try to control them.
